I’ll admit that I previously wrote the film off as a grimy relic of the 1970s when I watched scenes from that previous DVD incarnation, ultimately shutting it off after half an hour. In the Realm of the Senses remains one of the great erotic art films, and it retains 100% of its ability to shock and scandalize audiences today, every bit as it did in 1976. It isn’t even particularly titillating. It sounds far more exciting and disturbing on paper than it is in actual effect.
